Welcome to White Rock Gymnastics
Web Page!
White Rock Gymnastics
opened its doors to the community in September 1999 in downtown White Rock. In June of 2004, the gym moved to a brand new,
custom built facility in the Southpoint Business Centre, near the Morgan Creek Golf Course. The new
gym has built-in foam pits, and state of the art equipment. In June of 2006, the gym was sold to new owners, who have a long
history of success in the gymnastics community.
The new owners include Sue and Rusty Pierce, who have owned and operated Flip
City Gymnastics in Langley since 1998. Sue was a member of the Canadian Olympic Gymnastics Team,
and has represented Canada at World Championships, Olympic Games, and several other international
competitions. She has received several honours from Gymnastics Ontario, where she has been named an
honorary Life Member. Gymnastics B.C. has named her a Member of Distinction, and Gymnastics
Canada has named her an International Gymnast of Merit. Sue has been coaching since 1976, and has become
a specialist in Pre-School, and recreational gymnastics. Sue has a B.A.in Psychology
from York University.
Rusty Pierce has also been involved in gymnastics all his
life. He competed for Ontario at Canadian Championships before attending the University of Michigan,
where he competed for the Wolverines gymnastics team. Rusty obtained a B.S.E. (Engineering
Science) from the University of Michigan. After returnng to Canada, Rusty became a two-time Canadian Trampoline Champion,
and represented Canada at two World Championships, and World Cup competitions.
Since beginning coaching in 1975, Rusty has had success, placing over 20 artistic gymnasts on the B.C. teams to National Championships,
20 more trampoline athletes to Nationals, and several athletes to World and Olympic Championships. In 2004,
he was awarded the Petro Canada Coaching Excellence Award, only one of three gymnastics coaches in Canada
to receive this award.
Another member of our team of owners is Calina Hosu. Calina is another
life-long gymnast. Her gymnastics career began in her home country of Romania, where
she was selected to train with the national team under legendary coaches, Bela and Marta
Karolyi. Calina counts the amazing Nadia Comaneci among her team-mates and friends. Calina
competed for Romania at several international competitions, and eventually left Romania, to tour Europe as
part of a theatrical dance troupe. She stayed in Italy for two years before coming to Canada, and beginning her coaching career.
She has coached in New Brunswick, Ontario, B.C., and several places in
the U.S.A. When the opportunity came to be a member of our team at White Rock Gymnastics,
Calina was very excited to return to Canada, and White Rock in particular.
Our goal is to offer children the very best gymnastics experience possible. We know the
value of gymnastics to young children. We have seen kids develop strength, flexibility, agility, courage, discipline,
and many other traits that will help these kids with any other sport they may try in their lifetimes. Gymnastics is
a great 'base sport', and is recognized by many physical educators as a key activity in learning to master your body.
We also know that our sport is FUN! All of our coaches are certified by Gymnastics Canada, and we adhere
to the philosophy of teaching FUN, FITNESS and FUNDAMENTALS. “It is our fundamental belief that if
a child does not have fun in what they are doing, then we are not doing our job! As a result, gymnastics is taught using the
philosophy of FUN, FITNESS & FUNDAMENTALS.”
All coaches are N.C.C.P.
certified and carry years of valuable experience in the gymnastics world. Our staff are mature and
many carry post-secondary degrees in teaching, early childcare education, special needs training
and first aid.
